Meet Our New Student Lucia Napolez

ree

I am Lucia Napolez, born and raised in Yuma, AZ, before relocating to San Diego at the age of 17. I identify as Mexican-American and Native American, specifically Yaqui. I am a caregiver to my senior father, a sister to my Gen-Z siblings, and a committed partner to my fiancé. In my professional life, I work in higher education, providing outreach and financial aid services to local Native American students, helping them navigate access to resources and opportunities for success.

I am in my mid-30s and pursuing a Master of Divinity at Iliff School of Theology. I am grateful to be entering this new season of life where I can dedicate myself more fully to my theological studies while continuing to balance family and community commitments.

My decision to pursue an M.Div. grew out of years of service and reflection in church and community life. I felt the Spirit calling me to deepen my theological education so I can more effectively serve others, particularly those who are often overlooked. I was drawn to Iliff because of its strong reputation as an LGBTQ+ affirming seminary, its courageous engagement with contemporary theological issues, and its hybrid program model that allows me to remain close to home while pursuing an M.Div.

Since 2021, I have been an active member of University Christian Church in San Diego. My involvement has included co-leading workshops on emotional intelligence, allyship, and conflict resolution as part of the Health & Wellness collaborative group. These spaces are designed to foster intergenerational and intercultural connections between church members. I have been an active member of the Disciplines of Christ regional Camp Ministry Committee, serving as a camp counselor for Christian Youth Fellowship camps since 2019.

I am passionate about personal growth, particularly in areas of emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and historical learning. These areas fuel my commitment to self-advocacy, which involves speaking up for one’s rights, needs, and interests, and empower me to help others do the same. I am committed to walking alongside marginalized communities, whether through pastoral care, advocacy, or teaching. My passions are rooted in the belief that understanding history and human experience allows us to discern how best to serve God’s people today.

I remain open to where God’s call may lead. At this time, I feel drawn toward chaplaincy as a way of providing compassionate spiritual care in times of need. I am also discerning the possibility of becoming a professor of theological studies, helping to shape future generations of students and faith leaders. Above all, I hope my ministry will embody affirmation, inclusivity, and justice for all minoritized people.
