Honoring the Lenten Journey - A Lenten Reflection from Rev. Erin Tyler

The Lenten season is a time of honoring the journeys that we and our ancestors have wandered in the wilderness. Like the People of God in Exodus, it can feel as if we are on a meandering path with no clear destination in sight. The rest of the year, we focus outward, eyes fixed on the exterior sights and sounds that propel us forward. During Lent, we turn inward and remember that even as the people wandered through the desert, they were not alone and neither are we in our own wilderness journeys.

Like Jesus spending time on the mountain top with Moses and Elijah, we can find ourselves wondering what wisdom would our ancestors share with us for this season in our lives? What lessons would they want us to learn from? What would they encourage us to work for? What would they teach us about being agents of change for God’s beloved community?

With all that is going on in the world, it feels more important than ever to spend time being nourished by God’s love and with God’s beloved community. Like the manna that fed the people in the desert, God promises to nourish us so that we can continue our journey. Resting in the nurturing presence of God and God’s beloved is sacred resistance. The Empire tells us that we cannot rest because we are only worthy if we are productive. Empire tells us that we can never be good enough, powerful enough, rich enough. Empire wants us to hoard, to divide, and to conquer. God tells us that we are God’s own, Beloved, and we need not earn love or rest or our own worthiness. God invites us to build bridges, to widen tables, and to love more fully. When we take time to be spiritually nourished, we are inspired and emboldened by God’s love to bring more love, justice, peace, and wholeness to a weary, messy world.
