DSF's Response to CST's Announcement, January 2019
Letter from Rev. Dr. Jon Berquist to DSF Students & Friends
Dear DSF Friends and Family,
Claremont School of Theology has announced that they are proceeding in their relocation to Salem, Oregon, to be embedded with Willamette University. This has been a complex process, but both CST and Willamette University have continued and strengthened their commitment to this partnership. CST anticipates some presence and programming in Salem as early as Fall 2019, while classes continue in Claremont through Spring 2021. Details about the timing of the transition will be shared when available.
With this unfolding relationship, CST will benefit from a deep partnership with a major university that has a reputation for academic excellence and social responsibility. The university connection allows CST to participate in wider academic and cultural conversations, while also experiencing cost savings as part of a larger institution. Because many CST students attend online or in hybrid online/in-person environments, many of the students will remain where they live now -- whether in southern California, across the country, or throughout the world.
Since CST’s first announcement about a potential move in 2017, Disciples Seminary Foundation has responded with three commitments:
DSF will open offices in Salem, Oregon, continuing to work alongside our longest-term partner.
DSF will also continue its southern California presence and ministry, which is vital to our mission.
Through all of the change, our students remain our top priority.
In 2018, DSF began a new class of its successful Certificate of Ministry Studies program in Portland, Oregon, with more than 30 Disciples students in this Spanish-speaking preparation for ministry. In January 2019, we are also launching a new class in the San Fernando Valley of southern California. We are looking forward to providing education and formation for 100 Disciples church leaders through CMS this year. We also celebrate 115 students in our degree programs, all along the Pacific coast and well beyond, with five partner schools.
From Disciples Seminary Foundation, congratulations to Claremont School of Theology for reaching this milestone! We know that our partnership and shared ministry will thrive in Salem, and we are ready for the work of these years of transition.
President, Disciples Seminary Foundation
