Paul and Marilyn have been friends since their early teen years in rural Oakland, Iowa where they first met when Paul's father came to serve the Disciples church. After high school, Marilyn received her BS in Home Economics from ISU and Paul his BA from Drake University. They were married in 1955, and then Paul went to medical school at the State University of Iowa College of Medicine. He then joined the US Navy where he spent the next 20 years, followed by private practice with the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in San Diego. He retired from medicine in 1996.

Throughout their marriage they have remained faithful to their church and to the Disciples of Christ. They have been members of University Christian Church in San Diego for 33 years. Each has served the church in virtually every capacity. Presently Paul serves the homeless of San Diego through the work of the Uptown Faith Community Service Center. He also leads a local church group in home building in Tijuana, Mexico and does consulting work at the Tijuana Red Cross Hospital. They both sing in their church choir, and Marilyn remains very active in the Christian Women's Fellowship. They have been married for 53 years, which they see as the most laudable accomplishment of their lives.

Paul and Marilyn have blessed DSF with both treasure and talent. In addition to generous monetary contributions, the Claremont offices are enhanced by a gift of several Dali prints. Paul has served twelve years on the DSF's Board of Trustees and currently sits on DSF's Scholarship Campaign Planning Committee. Thank you, Paul & Marilyn, for your partnership!

“We give because we feel strongly that one of the best things we can do in the church is to help educate clergy. The cost of theological education is great and our primary motivation for partnering with DSF is to help underwrite the cost.”

Jack Klein, DSF Board Chair, 2006-2008

"The mission of DSF is a marathon, not a sprint. I give because I want to be a partner in building for the future."
