 In Memorium: Lester McCalister

Lester McAllister was closely tied to the Disciples Seminary Foundation during his Claremont retirement years. He particularly desired to help DSF develop its Discipliana Collection and serve as a Disciples history and polity resource to seminarians. He contributed many books, pieces of memorabilia, and hours to DSF; some of the latter were, for us, spellbinding moments in the presence of a master raconteur.

In tribute to Dr. McAllister, the Disciples Seminary Foundation has collected the memorial bulletin, and the memorial tributes and message to share with you, his many friends, colleagues, students, and admirers who could not be present on January 10, 2008, in Claremont, California, for the service.

Sharing Our Mission With a New Look

We hope you like the new look of the Report! The Disciples Seminary Foundation staff and Board of Trustees have worked hard for over a year updating our logo, developing a new tag line, and creating new key art. Our lamp and chalice, re-rendered by graphic artist Jerry Jackson, are now invigorated with depth and color. Our tag line affirms that we are all “Partners in the Journey,” and the bold colors of our key art – red, yellow, black, and brown – reflect the Church’s diversity.

DSF recognizes that if demographic shifts continue at their current rate, particularly if the new church movement maintains its momentum, by the year 2020 half of the congregations in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will be churches of color. That means that institutions like DSF must aggressively seek to train pastors of color to meet the growing demand for emerging theological leaders in the next thirteen years.

We want to interpret DSF’s ministry to those faithful people who do not know that DSF provides scholarships to graduate degree students (granting $143,000 in assistance this year alone), that DSF has a Center for Leadership Development to encourage Korean and Hispanic leaders and give guidance for first call pastors, and that DSF administers a Certificate of Ministry studies program for laity and licensed pastors.

In the next six months, DSF will be actively communicating our ministry to the general church. We will be developing an e-newsletter and revamping our website. We will be hosting cultivation gatherings designed to enlist partner donors in key locations in all seven of our West Coast regions. We will be utilizing regional and general communications.
