“By providing an understanding of music – its history, styles, and theology – and applying that understanding to the pastoral context, I help students explore music as a theologically saturated religious practice that integrates cultural experience, ministry, and theological reflection.”

Mark David Parsons Assistant Dean of DSF and Assistant Professor of Church Music, Claremont School of Theology

  Partner Seminaries

Claremont School of Theology

Claremont School of Theology is one of 13 seminaries operated by the United Methodist Church. It began as the Maclay School of Theology in the San Fernando Valley in the late 1800s and then became the School of Religion at the University of Southern California. In 1956, the school was moved from USC to Claremont. The school has approximately 300 students and 24 regular faculty, and offers degrees ranging from the Master of Arts to the Doctor of Philosophy. In addition to providing education for the ministry of congregations, it works in partnership with the Claremont Graduate University to educate persons for ministries in higher education. Its student body and faculty are denominationally, geographically, and ethnically diverse.

Since affiliating with the school in 1960, Disciples Seminary Foundation has brought to CST Disciples resources and a definite ecumenical dimension. CST provides faculty, a library, accreditation, and other resources;  DSF provides students with scholarships, professional and academic counseling, field education placement, job search assistance, and other services.  With the advent of the Disciples/UCC ecumenical partnership, DSF extends its services to UCC seminarians in Claremont.

Along with DSF, Claremont School of Theology offers joint programs with Episcopal School of Theology at Claremont, and students have cross-registration privileges with Claremont Graduate University and can draw on the vast resources of the Claremont Colleges Consortium.

Pacific School of Religion

Pacific School of Religion is an inter-denominational seminary historically related to the United Church of Christ located in Berkeley, adjacent to the campus of the University of California at Berkeley. PSR has a student body of about 250 and 16 regular faculty. The seminary is a member of the Graduate Theological Union, and has maintained close relations to regional judicatories of the United Methodist Church and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Northern California, and serves as a regional seminary to the Bay Area. It provides a range of certificate and degree programs, and through its affiliations with the Graduate Theological Union, participates in the preparation of persons for teaching.

In 1987 DSF entered into partnership with PSR, an institution with which the Disciples were related in the earliest years of the 20th century through Berkeley Bible Seminary. This was particularly appropriate given the ecumenical partnership developing through the 80s and 90s between Disciples and the United Church of Christ.  Through this relationship DSF supports Disciples students at all the institutions in the Graduate Theological Union.

Pacific School of Religion is a founding member of the Graduate Theological Union, a consortium of six protestant and three Roman Catholic seminaries, as well as centers for Buddhist and Jewish studies. Students can choose courses from any of the participating schools. The GTU offers the M.A. and Ph.D.

San Francisco Theological Seminary / Southern California

San Francisco Theological Seminary / Southern California (SFTS/SC) is the second campus of San Francisco Theological Seminary, an institution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) serving the West for over 125 years. SFTS/SC is located in Pasadena.  It is devoted to graduate theological education in the Reformed tradition and offers the Master of Arts in Theological Studies and Master of Divinity degrees.  SFTS/SC courses are composed of two parts:  Saturday intensives and midweek evening sections.  Students who work full- or part-time find this schedule advantageous. DSF cooperates with SFTS to offer the M.Div. for Disciples Korean students.
